TL;DR · Senior Solar Development Engineer, Solar Design Team

The Sr. Solar Development Engineer, Solar Design Team joins the Mechanical Engineering organization to lead the design, development, and qualification of solar array hardware for next-generation LEO constellation spacecraft. This role involves owning the development of solar power modules, deployable wing structures, secondary structures, and array-level mechanical interfaces. You will drive materials selection, create detailed CAD artifacts, and develop validation campaigns for mass production. Key technical skills include experience with composites, adhesive bonding, thin-film polymers, and flexible substrate technologies. You will perform structural, thermal, and durability analysis using tools like Ansys or NASTRAN to verify design margins. The work focuses on solving hardware challenges for satellite solar array assemblies, transitioning designs from initial concept through prototype fabrication and laboratory testing to production readiness.

What you'll do

  • Lead the design, analysis, and qualification of solar array subsystems from concept through production readiness.
  • Drive material selection and qualification for lightweight structures, including composites, adhesives, and thin-film polymers.
  • Create detailed CAD artifacts including geometry, schematics, ply schedules, and test methods.
  • Develop validation campaigns involving environmental testing, materials characterization, and hardware acceptance for mass production.
  • Perform or direct structural, thermal, and durability analyses to verify design margins and support trade studies.
  • Manage technical engagements with material suppliers, cell vendors, and manufacturing partners.
  • Lead design reviews and present hardware status and technical trade-offs to leadership.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics, or a related STEM field.
  • 5+ years of experience in hardware development within aerospace, automotive, defense, or other demanding industries.
  • Experience leading the design, analysis, and qualification of hardware from concept through production readiness.
  • Experience with lightweight structures, deployable systems, or precision mechanical assemblies in performance-critical environments.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication, hardware builds, or laboratory testing.
  • Experience with materials such as composites, adhesive bonding, thin-film polymers, or flexible substrate technologies.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates.
