Software Engineer II

What you'll do

• Build and maintain scalable backend services powering search for Uber Eats, Grocery, and Retail.
• Develop retrieval and ranking systems to help customers find relevant restaurants, stores, and items.
• Productionize LLM- and ML-powered search capabilities including query understanding and generative search experiences.
• Implement lexical and semantic retrieval using embeddings and ML-based ranking to improve relevance.
• Build scalable search serving and indexing infrastructure to handle high query volumes and large catalogs.
• Optimize system latency, throughput, and reliability across retrieval, ranking, and model serving paths.
• Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable production code for high-throughput, low-latency services.
• Analyze system performance and debug production issues to improve search relevance and serving efficiency.

What we're looking for

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building and delivering production systems.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Go, Java, C++, or Python.
• Experience developing backend services, APIs, or distributed systems.
• Understanding of core computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and system design.
• Experience writing maintainable, well-tested production code.
• Experience building scalable, high-throughput, or low-latency backend systems (preferred).
• Familiarity with search, recommendation, information retrieval, ranking, or ML-powered systems (preferred).
