As a Silicon Technology Research and Development Research Scientist Intern - 2027, you will join the IBM Research team to conduct world-class research on innovative technologies and solutions while contributing to the commercialization of resulting assets. You will apply your research skills toward new hardware design and applications, focusing on areas from state-of-the-art chip architecture, design, fabrication, and test to advanced chip packaging. The role requires expertise in semiconductor or memory device fabrication, lithography, plasma etch, novel film deposition, epitaxial growth, wet chemical processes, device physics, chip packaging, thermal management, polymer materials, computational materials science, computational optics, device simulation, and semiconductor test and characterization. This position addresses the technical challenges of advancing hardware systems by exploring innovations in semiconductor technology and materials science to solve complex problems in the field of computing infrastructure.

What you'll do

  • Conduct world-class research on innovative technologies and solutions.
  • Publish original research findings in top-tier conferences and journals.
  • Contribute to the commercialization of resulting research assets.
  • Apply research skills toward new hardware design and applications.
  • Develop innovations in chip architecture, fabrication, and advanced packaging.
  • Perform semiconductor test and characterization for new technologies.
  • Utilize computational materials science or device simulation to advance technology.

What we're looking for

  • Master's Degree (preferred).
  • Expertise in areas such as semiconductor/memory fabrication, lithography, plasma etch, film deposition, device physics, or chip packaging.
  • Experience in computational materials science, computational optics, or device simulation.
  • Demonstrated publication record in focus areas and/or internship experience (preferred).
  • Strong research background in semiconductor technology, materials science, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and ability to work both independently and in a team.
