TL;DR · Senior Thermal Engineer, Expeditionary AI / HPC Data Centers

Senior Thermal Engineer, Expeditionary AI / HPC Data Centers joins the Thermal Engineering team to manage thermal systems for air-transportable, modular compute and command-and-control infrastructure. This role involves owning the full development lifecycle, from conceptual design through prototyping and field testing, to ensure high-density equipment remains reliable in austere environments with extreme temperatures. Responsibilities include designing cooling architectures like chilled water plants, dry coolers, and direct-to-chip liquid cooling while performing trade studies on reliability and efficiency metrics like PUE and WUE. The candidate will utilize first principles, MATLAB, Python, and CAD tools such as Siemens NX or SolidWorks to perform thermal analysis. Technical requirements include expertise in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and HVAC systems. The role addresses the specific challenge of maintaining high-performance computing infrastructure in remote, contested locations with limited power and harsh environmental conditions.

What you'll do

  • Design and analyze cooling systems for deployable data centers including air-side, water-side, and liquid cooling technologies.
  • Perform first-principles thermal analysis using hand calculations, spreadsheets, and MATLAB or Python models.
  • Develop heat-rejection strategies for high-density racks in austere environments with extreme temperatures and limited power.
  • Conduct trade studies to balance cooling architecture against reliability, efficiency metrics (PUE/WUE), and total cost.
  • Execute thermal FEA/CFD simulations to predict facility performance and establish operational safety limits.
  • Lead prototype builds, field testing, and commissioning of cooling designs using CAD and data acquisition tools.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and failure reviews using test data and thermal modeling.
  • Develop internal software tools to improve the efficiency of thermal analysis workflows.

What we're looking for

  • MS or higher in mechanical engineering, applied physics, or a related field focused on heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and HVAC.
  • In-depth understanding of heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
  • 5+ years of experience designing thermal management systems for data centers or comparable mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Full-spectrum data center thermal experience including air/water-side cooling, heat rejection, chilled water plant design, and liquid cooling.
  • Experience with steady-state and transient system modeling of thermal management systems, including HVAC and refrigerant simulations.
  • Experience validating and testing data center thermal equipment according to applicable operating standards.
  • CAD experience with Siemens NX or SolidWorks.
  • Coding in Python or MATLAB, FEA/CFD experience, and ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance (preferred).
