JOB TITLE: Senior Network Software Engineer, Infrastructure Services
The Senior Network Software Engineer, Infrastructure Services joins the Apple Backbone Engineering group to design, build, and scale next-generation Software Defined Networking and Software Defined Infrastructure platforms. This role involves leading the architecture of distributed WAN controllers, automated configuration generation engines, and real-time streaming telemetry pipelines to govern global traffic routing and network resiliency. You will build mission-critical software systems using Go, C, and Python, utilizing gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and REST with TLS/mTLS. Key responsibilities include implementing high-performance microservices, managing state synchronization via consensus algorithms like Raft or Paxos, and utilizing tools such as Kubernetes, Terraform, ArgoCD, and OpenTelemetry. The work focuses on solving complex global networking problems by bridging IP and optical transport layers across extensive, high-performance Global Wide Area Networks.
Design fault-tolerant SDN controllers and state synchronization systems for global traffic engineering and intent-based routing.
Architect declarative configuration generation and transactional push engines using OpenConfig/IETF YANG models and gRPC.
Build software controllers to program control and data planes on physical and containerized routers.
Extend controller capabilities to bridge IP and optical transport layers.
Build high-throughput telemetry and analytics pipelines using NetFlow, gNMI, and OpenTelemetry at global scale.
Implement secure, low-latency microservices using Go, C, or Python with TLS/mTLS.
Deploy services using SRE best practices and GitOps-driven workflows with Kubernetes and Terraform.
What we're looking for
8+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems and network software.
Strong programming proficiency in Go (Golang), C, or Python for high-concurrency and systems programming.
Hands-on experience developing secure, high-throughput microservices using gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and REST with TLS/mTLS.
Solid foundation in distributed systems principles including consensus algorithms (Raft, Paxos), state synchronization, concurrency, and fault tolerance.
Experience with declarative configuration modeling, schema validation, and automated config deployment/push workflows to network devices.
Direct experience developing SDN Controllers, Path Computation Engines (PCE), or WAN Traffic Engineering platforms in hyperscale or carrier networks.
Proven track record with modern observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) and robust CI/CD pipelines.
BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical industry experience (preferred).
