TL;DR · Senior Materials and Process Engineer, Rocket Motor Systems (Polymeric Ablatives)

Senior Materials and Process Engineer, Rocket Motor Systems (Polymeric Ablatives) serves as a technical leader within the Rocket Motor Systems team, providing expertise for solid rocket motor components including propellants, cases, nozzles, and thermal protection systems. This role establishes critical infrastructure by developing material specifications, process specifications, and standard acceptance test procedures to transition products from prototype development to high-rate production. The engineer will perform materials characterization involving mechanical testing, thermal analysis, rheology, and ablation performance while establishing design allowables per CMH-17 or JANNAF standards. Key technical areas include high-temperature coatings, adhesives, and polymeric constituents like carbon phenolics and silicones. Day-to-day tasks involve troubleshooting manufacturing issues, leading root cause analyses for material anomalies, and managing supplier relationships. The role requires expertise in NDI techniques such as FTIR, Raman, X-ray, and ultrasonic testing to ensure production readiness.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain material specifications for raw materials, components, and assemblies across all rocket motor systems.
  • Create process specifications for manufacturing operations including propellant processing, heat treatment, and coating applications.
  • Establish standard acceptance test procedures and NDI technique sheets for incoming materials and finished hardware.
  • Convert informal work instructions into formal, configuration-controlled engineering documentation with defined process windows.
  • Lead material characterization programs and develop design allowables based on industry standards like CMH-17 and JANNAF.
  • Provide technical expertise to design and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot production issues and review manufacturing plans.
  • Manage supplier technical relationships and drive material and process qualifications from development through production readiness.
  • Lead failure investigations and root cause analyses for material-related anomalies during formal review boards.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of materials and process engineering experience in aerospace, propulsion, or defense applications.
  • Proven experience developing material specifications and process specifications for production programs.
  • Strong technical background in areas such as high-temperature coatings, adhesives, insulation, liners, ablatives, propellant materials, and bonding.
  • Experience with material characterization, testing, documentation, manufacturing troubleshooting, and leading root cause investigations.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • Direct experience with solid rocket motor systems including propellants, motor cases, nozzles, or energetic components (preferred).
  • Experience developing design allowables per CMH-17, JANNAF, or MIL-HDBK-17 standards (preferred).
