TL;DR · Senior Java Engineer, Distributed Systems, Serverless, Elasticsearch

Senior Java Engineer - Distributed Systems, Serverless - Elasticsearch will join the Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems team to enhance scale, performance, and resilience within the company's serverless offering. The role involves tackling complex distributed systems challenges regarding how nodes communicate and how data is indexed, allocated, and managed across clusters. Key responsibilities include improving components for concurrent indexing, maintaining cluster coordination systems, and resolving high-level performance or concurrency issues. Candidates must possess deep expertise in distributed systems, consensus algorithms, and core Java, including the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs. The role requires proficiency in algorithms and experience building features on multiple machines rather than using off-the-shelf services. Preferred skills include knowledge of Lucene, search, analytics, the JDK, and asynchronous event-driven network frameworks like Netty to solve large-scale data management problems.

What you'll do

  • Build and operate core components of the next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
  • Improve components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
  • Maintain the cluster coordination system to ensure performance, safety, and liveness during node changes.
  • Scale the system to handle a massive number of shards, nodes, and petabytes of data.
  • Identify and resolve complex performance, concurrency, and stability issues.
  • Lead end-to-end operational investigations until technical issues are fully resolved.
  • Support support engineers in resolving high-complexity technical problems.

What we're looking for

  • You must have a deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
  • You must possess strong skills in core Java, including the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs.
  • You must have deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
  • You must demonstrate the ability to work on complex, highly distributed systems rather than off-the-shelf services.
  • You must be able to own projects from beginning to end, including technical design and cross-team collaboration.
  • You must have a proven track record of using AI to accelerate development and debug complex systems.
  • Experience with data stores, search, analytics, or Lucene (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of the JDK or asynchronous event-driven network frameworks like Netty (preferred).
