TL;DR · Senior Character Technical Artist - EA SPORTS Technology

As a Senior Character Technical Artist at EA SPORTS Tech in Burnaby, you will play a crucial role in advancing the character motion and content pipelines for EA’s leading sports video games. Your daily responsibilities include developing complex skeletons, control rigs, and secondary animations using Houdini and Maya, as well as optimizing asset workflows within real-time constraints. You will collaborate closely with TAs, SEs, and Character Artists to ensure anatomical accuracy and realistic deformation in game characters. Expertise in Python or C# scripting is essential for implementing run-time rigging solutions, while familiarity with USD and procedural dependency graphs (PDG) enhances your ability to innovate within the Frostbite engine ecosystem. This role demands a deep understanding of human anatomy and animation principles, alongside a passion for pushing visual boundaries in sports entertainment technology.

What you'll do

  • Develop and debug character deformation and simulation in Houdini.
  • Create and optimize run-time rigging implementations for game engines.
  • Design complex skeletons, control rigs, and secondary animations using DCC tools.
  • Collaborate with TAs, SEs, and Character Artists to provide technical feedback.
  • Keep abreast of new Houdini features and their impact on future improvements.
  • Develop simulation and accessory rigs for EA SPORTS titles.

What we're looking for

  • At least 5+ years of experience in technical art/rigging/animation.
  • Expert knowledge in designing complex skeletons, control rigs, and skin deformations.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy and animation principles.
  • In-depth expertise with Houdini and Maya, including building HDAs and PDGs.
  • Experience with asset optimization and real-time limitations for character deformation.
  • Proficient scripting/programming skills in Python or C#.
  • Willingness to solve new technical challenges and limitations.
