What you'll do

Identify friction points in the software development lifecycle and scope agentic solutions to address them.
Design and build reliable AI-powered systems that follow step-by-step workflows with safety checks.
Build and maintain evaluation tools to judge agent output on correctness, constraint compliance, and cost.
Work across the entire GitLab codebase to resolve problems wherever friction exists.
Apply distributed systems judgment to identify and prevent failures in generated code under scale or concurrency.
Take ownership of greenfield problems to develop internal fixes into customer-facing capabilities.
Share roadmaps, findings, and reusable agent tooling with the India-based engineering group.

What we're looking for

Hands-on experience building agentic or large language model-based systems with multi-step orchestration, tool use, guardrails, and recovery patterns.
Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python, with the ability to read and modify code in the other languages.
Strong distributed systems knowledge, including coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, and failure modes.
Track record of working autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and driving solutions through completion.
Experience shipping autonomous agents that complete real tasks from start to finish (preferred).
Experience improving build systems, release processes, review workflows, or other parts of the software development lifecycle (preferred).
Experience working with globally distributed teams, LLM workload costs, or production constraints across various deployment types (preferred).
Must be a resident of the United States.
