Senior AI Software Engineer — T. Rowe Price Lab (NY or MD)
As a Senior AI Software Engineer within the AI Engineering squad, you will join a collaborative team of engineers and product owners to design, build, and scale production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems. You will lead technical workstreams, manage end-to-end delivery including architecture and observability, and experiment with emerging technologies to solve complex business problems. Your daily work involves developing agentic workflows using orchestration, tool integration, retrieval-based systems, and structured outputs while mentoring other engineers. The role requires proficiency in Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript, along with experience in LLM frameworks, cloud-native architectures, and containerized microservices. You will navigate technical trade-offs regarding model performance, latency, and security to move AI-enabled systems from prototype to production within the asset management domain.
Design, build, and scale production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems to solve complex business problems.
Develop agentic workflows using orchestration, tool integration, retrieval-based systems, and human-in-the-loop patterns.
Establish evaluation and testing frameworks for non-deterministic AI systems including quality metrics and failure analysis.
Make engineering trade-offs regarding model selection, prompt engineering, latency, cost, and system reliability.
Lead technical workstreams from initial experimentation and validation through to full production adoption.
Mentor junior engineers and lead code and design reviews to ensure high-quality software standards.
Evaluate emerging AI technologies to determine their potential for delivering measurable business value.
Create reusable AI capabilities and shared engineering patterns to improve consistency across the firm.
What we're looking for
BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Strong hands-on development experience in object-oriented languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
Hands-on experience building AI-enabled applications, intelligent workflows, or agentic systems using modern LLMs and AI development frameworks.
Practical experience with modern AI engineering patterns including orchestration, tool calling, retrieval-based systems, and prompt engineering.
Experience taking AI-enabled systems beyond prototypes toward production, including testing, monitoring, reliability, and security.
Strong experience with cloud-native architectures, containerized microservices, APIs, and modern software delivery practices.
Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical workstreams (preferred); understanding of financial markets, asset management, or financial instruments (preferred).
