JOB TITLE: Scientific Software Engineer
The Scientific Software Engineer joins the development team to build and maintain custom tools, systems, and sites with consistent performance and scalability. This role involves leading code management, maintaining CI/CD pipelines, developing regression test protocols, and coordinating with component model repositories to ensure seamless system upgrades. The engineer will support development teams with debugging, ensure software development best practices, and optimize model performance across distributed computation platforms. Key technical requirements include proficiency in Fortran, C++, Python, MPI, OpenMP, and containerized workflows like Docker or Singularity. Candidates must demonstrate experience with scientific DevOps, Agile methodology, and complex modeling system workflows. The work focuses on modernizing large-scale scientific or computational systems, specifically weather and climate modeling platforms used in research and operational forecasting environments.
Develop and maintain backend system components for scientific and enterprise applications.
Design data handling workflows and optimize model performance for distributed computation.
Lead code management and maintain proper CI/CD pipelines for software releases.
Develop and maintain regression test protocols and automated testing frameworks.
Coordinate with code managers to ensure seamless end-to-end system integration.
Test modeling infrastructure regularly across all supported platforms.
Debug issues for development teams while ensuring adherence to software best practices.
Implement automation and optimizations to improve system efficiency and scalability.
What we're looking for
Experience implementing and supporting Agile software development for large-scale scientific or computational systems.
Experience developing and integrating software using Fortran, C++, Python, MPI, OpenMP, or containerized workflows.
Experience with scientific DevOps, product management, and complex modeling system workflows.
Experience developing backend components for scientific applications, including data handling, model performance optimization, and distributed computation.
Experience creating solutions to complex technical problems within collaborative, cross-functional scientific or engineering teams.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination.
Bachelor’s degree or 12+ years of experience in software engineering in lieu of a degree.
Experience with Docker, Singularity, CI/CD pipelines, cloud HPC platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), or API integrations (preferred).
