JOB TITLE: Scientific Software Engineer
As a Scientific Software Engineer, you will join the development team to build and maintain custom tools, systems, and sites with consistent performance and scalability. You will provide code management support, develop regression testing protocols, maintain documentation, and support release protocols for various applications. Your daily work involves triaging bugs, investigating issues, and supporting hierarchical system development. You will utilize Python, C, C++, Fortran, shell scripting, and HPC programming environments including MPI and OpenMP. The role requires expertise in Agile methodology, scientific DevOps workflows, and workflow automation to modernize complex modeling or computational systems. You will specifically address technical problems involving data assimilation workflows, model coupling systems, performance benchmarking, and optimization for enterprise-scale scientific applications, including weather forecasting and coupled Earth-system models.
Develop custom tools, systems, and sites with consistent performance and scalability.
Provide code management support for various applications and maintain up-to-date documentation.
Develop regression testing protocols and ensure applications run tests across all supported platforms.
Develop and support release protocols for software applications.
Triage, investigate, and resolve bugs reported to the supported applications.
Support hierarchical system development and implement scientific DevOps workflows.
Optimize source code for scientific applications, numerical solvers, or coupled Earth-system models.
Automate multi-step systems and integrate workflows for large-scale modeling applications.
What we're looking for
5+ years of experience implementing, maintaining, and supporting Agile software development and scientific DevOps workflows.
5+ years of experience in software development using Python, C, C++, Fortran, shell scripting, or HPC programming environments.
Experience with Agile methodology, scientific software engineering, product development, workflow automation, and code management in large-scale modeling applications.
Experience developing and maintaining backend computational components, including data assimilation workflows, model coupling systems, and performance benchmarking.
Experience designing solutions to complex computational or modeling problems within collaborative, cross-functional scientific and engineering teams.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements.
Bachelor’s degree or 8+ years of software engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Modeling, or a related field (preferred); Doctorate degree (plus).
