TL;DR · Research Intern, Robotics

Research Intern, Robotics - Summer 2027 is a role within the Seattle Robotics Lab focused on fundamental and applied robotics research across the full stack, including perception, planning, control, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, simulation, and robotics foundation models. The intern will develop algorithms, foundation models, and methods for robotic manipulation or loco-manipulation for industrial, scientific, and household applications. They will integrate these methods into real-world systems like collaborative arms, humanoids, and dexterous hands while contributing to multi-person research projects and academic publications. Required skills include Python programming, familiarity with C++, CUDA, Warp, PyTorch, or JAX. Candidates should have experience with ROS2, Isaac Sim, Isaac Lab, Newton, or MuJoCo. The work addresses technical challenges in bimanual manipulation, multimodal robot learning, sim-to-real transfer, and the development of AI agents to accelerate research and engineering.

What you'll do

  • Develop algorithms and foundation models for robotic manipulation and loco-manipulation across industrial and household applications.
  • Integrate advanced robotics methods into real-world systems including collaborative arms, mobile manipulators, humanoids, and dexterous hands.
  • Contribute to multi-person research projects involving the full robotics and machine learning stack.
  • Publish high-impact research in top robotics and AI conferences, workshops, and through code releases.
  • Develop AI agents to accelerate research and engineering while ensuring correctness, reproducibility, and security.
  • Design robust workflows for model training and evaluation using modern deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or JAX.
  • Debug physics simulators and renderers while managing the complexities of sim-to-real transitions.
  • Maintain and enhance complex robotics hardware and debug underlying communication systems.

What we're looking for

  • Enrollment in a PhD program in Robotics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of both the theory and practice of robotics and AI with an interest in real-world applications.
  • A demonstrated track record with first-author work published in top robotics and AI conferences and journals.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with significant experience working on a team.
  • Exceptional programming skills in Python.
  • Fluency in modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
  • Experience with robotics frameworks like ROS2 and physics simulation frameworks such as Isaac Sim, Isaac Lab, Newton, and/or MuJoCo.
  • Familiarity with C++, CUDA, and Warp (preferred).
