TL;DR · Research Intern, AI Frontiers, Reasoning & Agentic Models

The AI Frontier Lab at Microsoft Research seeks Research Interns to contribute to the development of agentic models capable of performing complex tasks across digital systems. As part of a cutting-edge team focused on artificial intelligence research and publication in top-tier venues like NeurIPS, ICLR, and ICML, interns will engage in technical work such as advancing reinforcement learning for logical reasoning, developing training algorithms for efficient model execution, and exploring synthetic environments for multi-agent training. Interns must possess experience with deep learning and large language models, ideally from a graduate program in Computer Science or related field, along with a track record of influential publications and the ability to conduct original research collaboratively. The role involves working on diverse data modalities and modern model architectures within Microsoft’s ecosystem, aiming to enhance foundational AI technologies for broad application across products.

What you'll do

  • Develop and enhance reinforcement learning algorithms to improve logical reasoning in AI agents.
  • Create synthetic environments for training multi-agent systems through self-play techniques.
  • Investigate scaling laws between computational resources used during training versus testing phases.
  • Implement advanced optimization methods to train large-scale models more efficiently.
  • Publish research findings in top-tier conferences such as NeurIPS, ICLR, and ICML.

What we're looking for

  • Currently enrolled or accepted in a graduate program in Computer Science or related STEM field.
  • At least 1 year of experience with deep learning and large language model training.
  • Proven expertise in language model pre-training, post-training, or reinforcement learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop original research and perform hands-on work collaboratively.
  • Strong publication record in top-tier AI conferences like NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML.
  • Interest in advancing agentic model capabilities for automation and reasoning tasks.
  • Experience with synthetic environment creation and multi-agent training techniques.
