TL;DR · Quantum Measurement and Modeling Intern

The Quantum Measurement and Modeling Intern will join the IBM Research team to measure, simulate, and interpret the performance of research quantum processors and hardware components. The role involves conducting experimental characterizations such as spectroscopy and time-domain measurements, including coherence time assessments, to understand device behavior. You will develop simulation-based models to correlate experimental results with theoretical predictions, specifically investigating topics like qubit frequency, coupler dynamics, and multi-qubit interaction optimization. Required skills include a physics background, experience with RF and microwave electronics like spectrum analyzers and pulse generators, and Python coding. Preferred expertise includes solid-state qubit platforms, QuTiP, scqubits, HFSS, and COMSOL. This position addresses the technical challenge of advancing practical quantum computing by bridging the gap between hardware performance and theoretical modeling.

What you'll do

  • Measure, simulate, and interpret the performance of research quantum processors and hardware components.
  • Conduct experimental characterizations including spectroscopy and time-domain measurements.
  • Assess coherence times and analyze data to understand device behavior.
  • Develop simulation-based models to correlate experimental results with theoretical predictions.
  • Investigate coherence performance as a function of qubit frequency and coupler dynamics.
  • Optimize multi-qubit interactions and model-to-hardware correlations.
  • Utilize open-source quantum simulation frameworks such as QuTiP and scqubits.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or a related field.
  • Master's Degree (preferred).
  • Experience with RF and microwave electronics, including spectrum analyzers, digitizers, sources, and pulse generators.
  • Coding experience in Python.
  • Research background in the field of in solid-state qubit platforms (preferred).
  • Fluency in typical Python packages such as QuTiP or scqubits (preferred).
  • Experience with commercial simulation software such as HFSS or COMSOL (preferred).
