What you'll do

  • Implement features and resolve defects within backend services and APIs for ESPN's watch and streaming experiences.
  • Develop, test, and maintain scalable backend systems to support high-traffic live sports events and content.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues involving distributed systems, caching layers, and cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide operational support during mission-critical live events.
  • Design and implement reliable solutions for streaming workflows like multiview experiences and stream menus.
  • Utilize agentic AI tools to accelerate development workflows, code generation, and operational automation.
  • Contribute to technical design discussions, sprint planning, and the execution of delivery goals.
  • Research and integrate emerging technologies to improve platform performance and developer productivity.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing backend systems or APIs in Java, preferably with Spring Boot.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native development and AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, and S3.
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability stacks including DataDog, New Relic, and CloudWatch.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, build systems like TeamCity or Jenkins, and containerized deployments.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, caching strategies, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to use agentic AI development tools such as Cursor and Claude Code for code generation and debugging.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and provide support during high-stakes live events.
