TL;DR · Principal Manufacturing Automation Engineer

Principal Manufacturing Automation Engineer The Principal Manufacturing Automation Engineer joins the manufacturing team to lead the design, development, integration, and support of advanced automation and robotic systems. This role involves building custom solutions including robotic cells, special machinery, motion systems, and industrial control platforms while driving digital transformation through Industry 4.0 technologies like IoT sensors, AI/ML, and predictive analytics. The engineer will develop automated equipment for tooling and fixtures, manage technical documentation, and oversee the integration of vision systems and collaborative robots into production workflows. Key technical requirements include proficiency with TIA Portal, Studio 5000, TwinCAT, and WinCC, alongside experience with KUKA, FANUC, or ABB robotics. The role addresses complex manufacturing challenges by implementing digital twins, automated material-handling systems, and smart MES integrations to optimize production flow, ensure safety, and improve yield in high-mix, low-volume environments.

What you'll do

  • Design, develop, and integrate advanced robotic cells, motion systems, and custom machinery for manufacturing operations.
  • Implement Industry 4.0 technologies including IoT sensors, AI/ML, and predictive analytics to improve factory performance.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs) and assembly instructions.
  • Integrate industrial robot systems with vision systems, end-of-arm tooling, and external axes.
  • Provide hands-on production support, troubleshooting, and reliability improvements for automated equipment.
  • Oversee the development of digital twins and simulation tools to model factory operations and validate process changes.
  • Ensure seamless integration between automation hardware and smart MES platforms, ERP systems, and quality tracking software.
  • Research and implement new components and technologies to improve system performance and cost-effectiveness.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field with 12 years of experience; Graduate degree with 10 years; or 16 years of experience without a degree.
  • 10+ years of experience designing, programming, and commissioning automation systems, robotics, and advanced manufacturing equipment.
  • 8+ years of experience developing and supporting custom automated machinery including integrating Industry 4.0 technologies like IIoT and advanced analytics.
  • Proficiency with industrial automation platforms such as TIA Portal, Studio 5000, TwinCAT, and WinCC.
  • Understanding of machine design principles, servo/motion architectures, pneumatic systems, and automated assembly processes.
  • Experience integrating industrial robotic systems (KUKA, FANUC, ABB) and developing complete robotic cells with vision systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial automation safety standards, risk assessments, and ergonomics for automated systems.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen to obtain the required security clearance.
