The Principal Kubernetes Software Engineer joins the Kubernetes Distribution team to deliver secure, up-to-date Kubernetes and CNCF projects as packages for vSphere Kubernetes Service and vSphere Supervisor. This role focuses on Kubernetes internals, where you will design and perform business-aligned contributions regarding releases, security, manageability, scale, and integrations. You will develop features using Kubernetes controllers and patterns primarily written in Go while collaborating with a global community of open source engineers to build consensus through Key Enhancement Proposals. Responsibilities include writing automated tests, mentoring junior engineers, and managing high-level epics to ensure version compatibility and infrastructure improvements. The role requires deep expertise in Open Source Software and Cloud-Native Computing Foundation projects. You will solve technical challenges related to runtime, networking, storage, and resource management within a multi-cloud infrastructure environment.

What you'll do

Develop features and fixes for Kubernetes and CNCF projects using Go and common patterns.
Design and submit Key Enhancement Proposals (KEPs) to build consensus within the open-source community.
Ensure compatibility between Kubernetes versions and internal automation, pipelines, and testing systems.
Deliver code changes to upstream open-source projects while meeting security and compliance requirements.
Break down high-level epics into individual work items for team estimation and scoping.
Write automated tests to validate and secure critical customer functionalities.
Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on complex problems and product opportunities.
Participate in on-call rotations to triage, troubleshoot, and mitigate production issues.

What we're looking for

Must have Kubernetes expertise and material engineering contribution to at least one CNCF project and various OSS projects.
Experience with one or more cloud platform architectures.
History of leading system software projects or teams.
Good knowledge of distributed systems, databases, algorithms, and data structures.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Bachelor's degree plus 12+ years of related experience or Master's degree plus 10+ years of related experience.
Must have legal authorization to work in the US.
Experience with vSphere, complex container/kernel functionality, or contributions to multiple CNCF projects (preferred).
