TL;DR · | Microsoft Careers

The Quantum Materials UHV Hardware Engineer role is a senior position within our materials and device pipeline team, focusing on designing and operating ultra-high vacuum systems for advanced deposition and processing. This engineer will collaborate closely with various teams to develop robust hardware platforms that enhance experimental throughput and scalability. Daily responsibilities include executing complex characterization experiments using STM/STS, APT, and TEM to extract atomic-scale information crucial for interface quality, defect distribution, and electronic properties. The role also involves leading national lab collaborations, providing technical leadership across cross-functional teams, and developing data analysis pipelines with AI tools. Candidates should have a PhD in Physics or related field along with extensive experience in advanced characterization techniques and quantum materials research. Expertise in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems and familiarity with MBE growth and low-temperature transport measurements are highly valued.

What you'll do

  • Define and execute advanced characterization experiments using STM/STS, APT, and TEM.
  • Extract atomic-scale information on interface quality, composition, defects, and dopant distribution.
  • Establish feedback loop linking nanoscale measurements to qubit-relevant metrics for materials-device integration.
  • Lead experimental campaigns at U.S. national laboratories and user facilities.
  • Develop high-throughput data acquisition pipelines using AI/ML tools for analysis.
  • Interpret complex datasets to identify root causes of performance limitations in quantum materials.
  • Communicate insights across disciplines, influencing material selection and device architecture decisions.

What we're looking for

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years experience in advanced characterization or quantum materials R&D.
  • Expertise in STM/STS, APT, and TEM.
  • Experience designing and executing complex characterization experiments.
  • Ability to interpret nanoscale structural and electronic data.
  • Track record of technical impact through publications or major programs led.
