TL;DR · Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Robot Security & Safety) | Microsoft Careers

As a Senior Member of Technical Staff specializing in Microsoft Robotics Security & Safety, you will join a cutting-edge team dedicated to defining and implementing robust security and safety frameworks for Microsoft’s robotics platform. Your daily responsibilities include designing end-to-end security architectures across hardware and software layers, developing threat models specific to robotic systems, and enforcing safety envelopes to prevent physical harm from AI behavior failures or environmental uncertainties. You will work with telemetry data to identify trends in security posture, scale solutions to address current threats, and develop incident response processes for robotics-specific events. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with robotics engineers and AI researchers to integrate security requirements into the software development lifecycle, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as NIST and IEC 61508. The ideal candidate has experience in functional safety standards, AI safety methodologies, and ROS/ROS2 security models, along with a background in IoT or OT security.

What you'll do

  • Design end-to-end security architectures for robotic systems across hardware and software layers.
  • Develop safety analyses and threat models specific to robotic systems in human environments.
  • Define and enforce runtime safety monitors for autonomous robot behaviors under various failure conditions.
  • Analyze security metrics and telemetry data to identify trends and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Scale solutions to address identified security control issues and current threats specific to robotics deployments.
  • Implement incident response processes for robotics-specific security and safety events, including physical incidents.

What we're looking for

  • Extensive experience with functional safety standards and methodologies applied to robotic or autonomous systems.
  • Proficient in AI safety practices including runtime monitoring of autonomous system behaviors and red-teaming AI-enabled physical systems.
  • Expertise in robotics system architectures, ROS/ROS2 security models, and cloud-to-edge communication security for robot fleets.
  • Industry certifications in cybersecurity or functional safety are preferred (e.g., CISSP, GICSP, CEH, TUV, CFSE).
  • Background in IoT security, embedded systems security, or operational technology (OT) security for connected physical devices.
  • Experience developing and executing security breach drills, tabletop exercises, or incident response simulations for cyber-physical systems.
