TL;DR · Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Robot Learning)

Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Robot Learning) joins the Microsoft Robotics team within the Discovery and Quantum division to develop a platform for physical intelligence. This software engineer II role involves developing, training, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models that enable robots to perceive, reason about, and act in the physical world. Key responsibilities include building data pipelines for teleoperation demonstrations, training vision-language-action models on GPU clusters, and deploying policies to physical robot platforms for manipulation and navigation tasks. The role requires proficiency in Python, PyTorch, JAX, and C++, alongside experience with reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and robotics middleware like ROS/ROS2. You will solve complex sim-to-real transfer issues and build reliable, generalizable robot behaviors for human-robot collaboration and industrial applications.

What you'll do

  • Develop and train end-to-end robot learning models including VLA, imitation learning, and reinforcement learning policies.
  • Build and optimize data pipelines for teleoperation demonstrations, preprocessing, augmentation, and dataset versioning.
  • Train deep learning models on GPU clusters using distributed training and hyperparameter optimization.
  • Deploy trained models to physical robot platforms and debug sim-to-real transfer issues.
  • Implement evaluation frameworks to track success rates, generalization, and regression across standardized benchmarks.
  • Write production-quality Python code using PyTorch or JAX that adheres to engineering excellence standards.
  • Review technical designs and code to ensure adherence to security practices and coding patterns.
  • Evaluate state-of-the-art research in robot learning and physical AI for platform integration.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 2+ years of technical engineering experience in languages like C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Equivalent experience to the required degree and years of experience is accepted.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including a Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 3+ years of technical engineering experience in relevant programming languages (preferred).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 5+ years of technical engineering experience in relevant programming languages (preferred).
  • Experience in end-to-end robot learning, including imitation learning, reinforcement learning, or vision-language-action model training and deployment on physical robots (preferred).
  • Proficiency in Python with deep experience in PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow for training and deploying deep learning models (preferred).
  • Experience with robot learning data pipelines, robotics middleware (ROS/ROS2), and distributed training on GPU clusters (preferred).
