As a Senior Engineer on the Middleware team, you will play a pivotal role in evolving our Kong AI Gateway platform by designing and building gateway capabilities that support enterprise-wide AI/LLM integrations. Your responsibilities include collaborating with Product and Technology teams to enhance the platform’s value, developing Kong plugins for authentication, rate limiting, logging, and request/response transformation, and creating internal tools to streamline AI integration across development teams. You will also maintain platform health through upgrades and operational best practices while contributing to technical documentation and reusable patterns that ensure consistent onboarding. This role requires 6+ years of software development experience with a focus on APIs, containers, microservices, and application development using multiple programming languages, as well as hands-on experience with Kong API Gateway in enterprise environments.

What you'll do

Design and develop Kong plugins for authentication, rate limiting, logging, and request/response transformation.
Build and maintain gateway capabilities supporting MCP and LLM traffic in enterprise environments.
Develop internal tools to improve AI capability integration across organizational teams.
Write and maintain technical documentation for platform adoption and usage by internal teams.
Contribute to reusable patterns and reference implementations enabling consistent onboarding practices.
Collaborate with Product and Technology partners to enhance Kong AI Gateway platform value delivery.
Maintain platform health through upgrades, configuration management, and operational best practices.

What we're looking for

6+ years of software development experience with APIs and microservices.
2+ years implementing Kong API Gateway or AI Gateway in enterprise settings.
Strong background in application development using multiple programming languages.
Experience with containers, authentication plugins, rate limiting, and logging.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field required.
Systems thinking and ability to design scalable platform solutions.
