TL;DR · Governance Lead

The Governance Lead will join a team dedicated to helping a large federal agency responsibly adopt artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. This role involves driving the development of enterprise policies, governance frameworks, and implementation guidance to address operational, legal, privacy, civil rights, and security considerations. You will design practical governance processes, establish decision rights, and translate complex requirements into actionable guidance for technical teams and executives. Key responsibilities include managing AI inventories, model registries, and guardrails for generative AI, AI agents, and retrieval-augmented generation. You will utilize skills in technology policy, enterprise risk, and digital transformation to coordinate with legal, cybersecurity, and acquisition stakeholders. The work focuses on solving the challenge of balancing rapid innovation with rigorous oversight in a complex, regulated federal environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain enterprise policies, standards, and procedures for the acquisition and deployment of AI technologies.
  • Design governance processes including review boards, approval workflows, escalation paths, and exception processes.
  • Translate federal requirements and agency priorities into actionable technical guidance for engineering and data teams.
  • Develop governance approaches for generative AI, AI agents, and third-party models including human oversight and evaluation.
  • Define technical requirements for AI inventories, model registries, access controls, and monitoring guardrails.
  • Facilitate working groups and prepare executive briefings to build organizational consensus on technology tradeoffs.
  • Measure governance effectiveness by assessing adoption, compliance, and identifying implementation barriers.

What we're looking for

  • 10+ years of experience in technology governance, technology policy, enterprise risk, or digital transformation.
  • 3+ years of experience in AI governance or AI policy.
  • Experience leading enterprise technology policy or governance initiatives for a federal agency or complex, regulated organization.
  • Experience advising senior executives and producing concise, decision-oriented briefings, policy documents, and recommendations.
  • Experience designing governance structures, including review boards, risk assessments, accountability models, and exception management.
  • Knowledge of AI and generative AI capabilities, limitations, and risks, including model evaluation, data quality, and bias.
  • Ability to interpret federal policy and oversight requirements and coordinate across technical teams and mission organizations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination.
  • Experience supporting large federal organizations with law enforcement, security, or sensitive missions (preferred).
  • Experience governing AI across multiple cloud providers, enterprise platforms, and self-hosted environments (preferred).
  • Knowledge of federal AI requirements, NIST AI risk management resources, and related privacy or cybersecurity processes (preferred).
  • Master's degree in AI governance, technology policy, public administration, risk management, program management, or organizational change (preferred).
  • AI governance, Technology Policy, Public Administration, Risk Management, Program Management, or Organizational Change Certification (preferred).
