TL;DR · GNC Engineer (Starlink)

Join SpaceX's Starlink guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) team as a GNC Engineer where you will develop highly reliable algorithms for thousands of satellites in the world’s largest constellation. Your daily tasks include writing production code in C++ or Python to create simulations, tools, and dashboards that optimize satellite orbits, manage fleet operations, and ensure collision avoidance. You’ll also analyze bulk data from the Starlink network to enhance performance and maintain on-call support for real-time satellite command and monitoring. Ideal candidates have a background in orbital mechanics, control theory, and spacecraft systems design, along with experience in software development using C++ or Python. This role demands expertise in state estimation, low thrust trajectory optimization, and strong knowledge of numerical probability of collision methods.

What you'll do

  • Develop highly reliable and performant GNC algorithms using C++ or Python.
  • Conduct bulk data analysis to review performance from Starlink constellation elements.
  • Write high-quality technical documentation for programs, algorithms, or analysis.
  • Support on-call operations rotations by commanding satellites or reviewing network data.
  • Design satellite collision avoidance systems and precision state estimation tools.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, aerospace, physics, or engineering discipline
  • Software development experience in C++ or Python
  • Strong understanding of orbital mechanics and trajectory optimization
  • Experience with state estimation and attitude determination
  • Familiarity with spacecraft systems design and flight operations
  • Verification of GNC algorithm performance through simulation
  • Master's degree or PhD in an engineering discipline or physics (preferred)
