As an Engineering Manager of Managers, Service Infrastructure, you will lead multiple teams within the Service Infrastructure organization to advance architecture and manage critical services. You will oversee a team of engineers and engineering leaders, providing technical leadership in architecture, design, vision, and incident response processes. Your daily work involves collaborating with infrastructure and product engineering leaders to develop frameworks, abstractions, and developer tooling that improve internal developer experience and API availability. The role requires managing teams focused on distributed system infrastructure, API design, and client libraries. You will utilize skills in managing large-scale organizations, coordinating across functional boundaries, and navigating complex stakeholder relationships. Technical expertise includes working with Java, Ruby, cloud primitives from AWS, and common infrastructure platforms like databases, logging, event streams, metrics, and caching to solve problems related to service-oriented architectures.
Manage and grow a team of engineers and engineering leaders to deliver high-impact projects on schedule.
Provide hands-on technical leadership regarding architecture, design, vision, and incident response processes for reports.
Develop frameworks and abstractions that enable product engineers to ship features quickly and reliably.
Identify user pain points to prioritize the most critical engineering work for the infrastructure team.
Drive systemic improvements to Stripe’s architecture in collaboration with leaders across the company.
Manage the hiring strategy and partner with recruiting teams to attract top talent.
Oversee the operation of mission-critical distributed system infrastructure and API semantics.
What we're looking for
At least 2 years of experience as a manager of managers leading teams of at least 25 people.
At least 3 years of experience managing teams that ship and operate critical distributed system infrastructure.
Experience leading staff or principal engineers to drive alignment on architectural or strategic decisions.
Experience managing incident response processes and on-call rotations.
Experience managing engineering teams focused on API design, abstractions, frameworks, or client libraries.
Experience driving business success in cross-functional organizations with high autonomy and managing diverse stakeholder relationships.
Experience building, recruiting for, mentoring, and retaining team members while leading both remote and colocated teams.
8+ years of management experience including 5+ years as a manager of managers (preferred); strong communication skills; and experience with infrastructure platforms (preferred).
