The Distributed Systems Engineer 6 - Ads Policies joins the Ads Platform Engineering team to build and lead the infrastructure governing advertising policies across the Netflix ecosystem. This individual-contributor role involves providing technical leadership to define, govern, evaluate, and explain policies that ensure brand safety and regulatory compliance. You will shape long-term architecture for shared policy models, lifecycle services, and evaluation paths while producing code, designs, and prototypes. Key responsibilities include establishing reliability, scalability, and security standards for systems used in campaign planning, creative review, and real-time serving. Required skills include deep experience in large-scale distributed systems, preferably on the JVM, along with expertise in API design, data modeling, and schema evolution. Knowledge of Typescript and experience with rules engines or trust and safety systems are also valued.
Set the long-term technical strategy and architecture for shared policy models and governance services.
Establish reliability, scalability, security, and operational standards for systems used across campaign planning and serving.
Produce production-ready code, designs, prototypes, and architecture to simplify systems and accelerate delivery.
Identify technical gaps across teams and influence roadmaps to optimize for global business impact.
Lead highly ambiguous initiatives requiring alignment across Policy, Product, Operations, and multiple engineering teams.
Make durable cross-system decisions and influence partner roadmaps to ensure platform-level policy enforcement.
Manage performance analysis, testing, observability, and incident response for business-critical production systems.
What we're looking for
Deep experience in AdTech is required.
Experience in Ads Policy or Trust and Safety is a bonus (preferred).
Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems, ideally on the JVM or a comparable server-side platform.
Demonstrated ability to set longer-term technical strategy and drive architectural decisions across multiple systems or teams.
Strong knowledge of API design, data modeling, schema evolution, versioning, backward compatibility, and correctness-sensitive evaluation.
Understanding of Typescript, UX, and UI design principles.
Ability to communicate complex technical issues and business consequences clearly to engineering, product, policy, operations, and leadership audiences.
Experience with rules engines, policy or entitlement systems, authorization, risk platforms, or expression evaluation (preferred).
