TL;DR · Control Electronics Engineer Intern

The Control Electronics Engineer Intern 2027 joins the IBM Quantum team to support the development of utility scale quantum computer systems. This role focuses on building, deploying, and calibrating room temperature electronics used to produce microwave pulses for superconducting qubits cooled in dilution refrigerators. Day-to-day responsibilities include troubleshooting complex systems, suggesting improvements for system reliability and stability, and enhancing the qualification, setup, and operation of Chiller Distribution Units that provide constant temperature fluid for critical components. The ideal candidate possesses a background in electrical engineering or physics and demonstrates proficiency in electrical control setups, test and validation procedures, and microwave circuits. Additional relevant skills include knowledge of classical control and readout of quantum circuits as well as an understanding of circuit design and testing within the specific domain of quantum control systems.

What you'll do

  • Build out room temperature electronics (RTE) systems for quantum computer control.
  • Troubleshoot issues within complex electrical control setups and hardware components.
  • Suggest improvements to enhance the reliability and stability of RTE systems.
  • Improve the qualification, setup, and operation of Chiller Distribution Units.
  • Maintain constant temperature fluid flow for critical system components.
  • Test and validate microwave circuits and control systems.
  • Monitor and maintain infrastructure supporting superconducting qubits in dilution refrigerators.

What we're looking for

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
  • Studies in EE, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in electrical control setups and knowledge of test and validation of control setups.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems.
  • Interest in working in the field of quantum control systems.
  • General knowledge of microwave circuits and test equipment (preferred).
  • Knowledge of classical control/readout of quantum circuits and understanding of circuit design and test (preferred).
