The ASE Compute team is seeking a senior SRE software engineer to own the technical direction of Kubernetes internals for Apple services. You will architect controllers and namespace management infrastructure, strengthen service reliability, and engage with the upstream community to drive requirements. Daily responsibilities include writing complex code, setting reliability standards like SLOs and error budgets, leading incident responses, and mentoring other engineers. You will also build AI-assisted tooling to accelerate triage and infrastructure automation. The role requires expert-level Go, experience with configuration management tools like Puppet or Ansible, and deep knowledge of multi-tenant Kubernetes environments. You must troubleshoot across the full stack, including networking and container runtimes, to solve complex production problems for global services like iCloud and Apple Music.
Own the architecture and technical direction for controllers and namespace management infrastructure at global scale.
Identify and fix complex reliability problems by building permanent fixes into the platform and automating operational loads.
Establish platform reliability standards including SLOs, error budgets, alerting philosophies, and rollout strategies.
Lead incident response for critical production issues and execute post-incident follow-up work.
Represent Apple in the upstream Kubernetes community to drive requirements through design proposals and code.
Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and direct technical guidance.
Advise partner service teams on platform capabilities and tradeoffs to shape the Compute roadmap.
Build AI-assisted tooling to accelerate triage, operational workflows, and infrastructure automation.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, an engineering-related field, or equivalent related experience.
8+ years in a Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or Infrastructure focused role.
Deep experience operating large-scale, multi-tenant Kubernetes environments in production.
Strong systems background with the ability to troubleshoot across the full stack including network, OS, container runtime, and application.
Expert-level Go with a track record of shipping and owning controllers or operators.
Experience with configuration management at scale using Puppet, Ansible, or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional initiatives and strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with third-party cloud platforms, bare-metal provisioning, cloud-native observability, or running infrastructure as a managed service (preferred).
