Staff Software Engineer, Android

What you'll do

• Own the end-to-end Android build system, including the Bazel build graph, Starlark rules, and toolchains.
• Reduce CI and local build latency using remote caching, remote execution, and build-graph pruning.
• Ensure consistency between local and CI results for builds, tests, and linting.
• Eliminate build flakiness and provide actionable telemetry for every build failure.
• Lead coordinated upgrades for Bazel, Kotlin, and Android toolchains across the monorepo.
• Implement smart test selection to run only the tests affected by specific code changes.
• Define and track build health metrics including latency, success rates, and cache hit rates.
• Write design documents and set technical standards for build infrastructure across the organization.

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of full-time engineering experience.
• Systematic problem-solving approach and knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis.
• Strong understanding of Android development.
• Deep, hands-on experience with Bazel or Buck for Android builds, including Starlark rules and dependency management (preferred).
• Experience with remote build caching, remote execution, and CI systems at scale (preferred).
• Knowledge of Android build internals like Gradle, D8/R8, and Kotlin compiler performance (preferred).
• Experience leading large-scale build migrations, tooling development in Kotlin/Java, or applying LLMs to developer tooling (preferred).
