Staff Forward Deployed Engineer

What you'll do

• Contribute production-quality code, bug fixes, and features to GitLab’s product and adjacent systems.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical blockers across CI/CD workflows, APIs, and cloud environments for strategic customers.
• Drive the adoption of the GitLab Duo Agent Platform by resolving governance, security, and workflow design issues.
• Coordinate across internal teams like Engineering, SRE, and Support to resolve high-impact customer problems.
• Convert field-discovered blockers into durable product improvements, reference architectures, and repeatable implementation patterns.
• Create technical narratives, whitepapers, and adoption frameworks to shape industry approaches and internal strategy.
• Provide data-driven recommendations to improve customer architecture, automation, and overall GitLab usage.

What we're looking for

• Staff-level experience building, operating, or improving complex production software systems.
• Experience contributing to large, mature product codebases with high standards for testing, maintainability, performance, and security.
• Strong Ruby on Rails or Go experience to contribute directly to GitLab’s product and adjacent systems.
• Experience with AI-assisted software development, agentic workflows, AI governance, model evaluation, or AI adoption in enterprise environments.
• Experience diagnosing complex system behavior across application code, data stores, infrastructure, observability, networking, APIs, and customer usage patterns.
• Deep knowledge of modern DevSecOps workflows, including Git, CI/CD, security controls, and compliance needs.
• Experience working with strategic customers or senior technical stakeholders in ambiguous, high-impact situations.
• Strong written communication skills and the ability to create technical narratives and distinguish reusable product work from customer-specific customization.
