You will collaborate with product management, architecture, and other teams to design robust systems, identify performance bottlenecks, and improve data models. Your responsibilities include evaluating technical trade-offs, driving architectural decisions for long-term sustainability, and participating in on-call rotations. The role requires experience with modern programming languages like Go, Java, or Python, operating large-scale distributed systems on AWS, and using container orchestration frameworks such as Kubernetes. Familiarity with event streaming technologies, observability tools, and database technologies is a plus. This position involves working on cutting-edge data solutions that process over 12 trillion API calls annually, addressing complex engineering challenges to enhance customer impact and developer velocity.

What you'll do

  • Design and build robust, scalable backend systems and APIs across Segment’s data platform.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in system architecture to enhance developer velocity.
  • Evaluate trade-offs between feature velocity, system stability, and technical debt for long-term sustainability.
  • Collaborate with product management and engineering teams to define solutions that balance usability and performance.
  • Troubleshoot and improve system reliability by debugging issues and refining operational processes.

What we're looking for

  • 2+ years of experience writing production-grade code in modern programming languages.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems and cloud infrastructure like AWS.
  • Hands-on experience with container orchestration frameworks such as Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency in asynchronous processing systems and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD).
  • Strong software engineering skills to build scalable and extensive systems.
  • Excellent technical communication skills for conveying complex concepts clearly.
