TL;DR · Senior Quantum Materials UHV Hardware Engineer | Microsoft Careers

As a Senior Quantum Materials UHV Hardware Engineer at Microsoft Quantum, you will join a multidisciplinary team focused on advancing the materials and device pipeline for quantum technology. Your primary responsibilities include designing and building custom ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems capable of achieving base pressures around 10⁻¹¹ Torr, integrating advanced components like pumps, gauges, and cryogenic stages, and ensuring thermal stability across a wide temperature range. You will collaborate closely with materials growth, nanofabrication, characterization, and device teams to adapt hardware platforms for evolving experimental needs, leveraging modern AI tools to enhance system monitoring and troubleshooting. The role requires expertise in 3D CAD design, hands-on experience with machining and metal fabrication, and proficiency in UHV systems and cryogenic hardware. This position demands a Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields, along with a strong track record of building advanced materials deposition tools.

What you'll do

  • Design and build custom UHV chambers achieving base pressures of ~10⁻¹¹ Torr.
  • Implement variable-temperature stages for materials deposition from 1000°C to cryogenic temperatures.
  • Adapt hardware platforms to meet evolving experimental requirements in quantum materials research.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure hardware capabilities align with program needs.
  • Utilize AI tools to improve system monitoring, log analysis, and failure diagnosis.

What we're looking for

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing or operating UHV systems and materials deposition tools.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and visualization tools (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Hands-on experience with machining, metal fabrication, or close collaboration with machine shops.
  • Proven track record building or significantly upgrading UHV systems for advanced materials or quantum-relevant experiments.
  • Experience supporting materials growth platforms such as MBE, evaporation, sputtering.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic hardware, thermal design, and vibration-sensitive systems.
