TL;DR · Research Intern, Quantum-HPC Integration

Research Intern 2027 – Quantum-HPC Integration joins a multidisciplinary team at IBM Quantum focused on the intersection of high-performance computing systems and emerging quantum processors. The role involves building integration software to enable hybrid quantum-HPC workflows, developing resource management systems, and creating interfaces that orchestrate workloads across classical and quantum compute backends. Key responsibilities include designing workflow orchestration libraries, implementing scheduling APIs for distributed systems, and evolving interfaces between HPC job schedulers like Slurm or LSF and quantum runtimes. The position requires proficiency in Python and at least one systems programming language such as C, C++, or Rust. Candidates should possess skills in open-source development, CI/CD, and performance instrumentation. The work addresses the technical challenge of creating interoperability, data movement, and runtime monitoring for hybrid computing environments involving tools like Qiskit, OpenQASM, and CUDA-Q.

What you'll do

  • Develop integration software to enable hybrid quantum-HPC workflows and resource management systems.
  • Build components of workflow orchestration software and libraries for hybrid quantum-HPC systems.
  • Design and develop resource management, scheduling, and workload coordination APIs across distributed systems.
  • Implement robust interfaces between HPC job schedulers and quantum runtimes.
  • Develop tools in Python, Rust, and C to support data movement, interoperability, and runtime monitoring.
  • Participate in open-source development workflows including documentation, testing, design reviews, and release processes.
  • Contribute to internal engineering practices such as CI/CD and performance instrumentation.

What we're looking for

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with modern software engineering practices.
  • Proficiency in at least one systems programming language such as C, C++, or Rust.
  • Hands-on experience with HPC software and resource managers (preferred).
  • Experience with quantum computing frontends and related ecosystems (preferred).
  • Ability to understand user requirements, implement features, and manage post-release maintenance (preferred).
