TL;DR · Propulsion Engineer, Merlin Hardware Development

As a Propulsion Engineer (Merlin Hardware Development), you will serve as the primary technical point of contact for specific engine components and systems throughout their entire lifecycle, from initial build through acceptance testing and flight operations. You will drive design improvements, lead qualification test campaigns, resolve production issues, and conduct root cause investigations to enhance reliability and performance. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams in avionics, software, and manufacturing to deliver flight-ready hardware while briefing customers on technical status. Key requirements include a degree in engineering or physics and experience in fabrication, assembly, testing, and CAD design. Preferred skills include expertise in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and combustion, alongside proficiency in Siemens NX, ANSYS, Python, and Matlab. You will solve critical propulsion challenges to improve engine manufacturability and reduce turnaround times for launch vehicle operations.

What you'll do

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for a specific engine component throughout its entire lifecycle.
  • Lead development and qualification test campaigns for hardware improvements and root cause investigations.
  • Design, analyze, produce, and operate propulsion hardware across development and flight operations.
  • Resolve day-to-day production, test, and launch issues by working directly with the hardware.
  • Brief commercial and government customers on technical risks and hardware status as a subject matter expert.
  • Lead anomaly investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop tools and automation to streamline analysis and accelerate engineering decision-making.
  • Improve engine maintenance procedures to enhance hardware readiness and reduce turnaround time.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or physics.
  • 1+ years of academic or professional hands-on experience performing fabrication, assembly, and/or testing.
  • 1+ years of academic or professional experience using CAD to design parts and assemblies.
  • Master's degree in mechanical, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering is preferred.
  • 1+ years of academic or professional experience related to combustion devices or rocket engine development.
  • Proficiency in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, combustion, structures/fracture mechanics, and materials.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes (CNC, welding, castings, additive) and Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFMA).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee to meet ITAR requirements.
