TL;DR · Postdoctoral Associate

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies at the University of Miami is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join a research team focused on meteorology. The incumbent will contribute to research regarding boundary-layer dynamics and air-sea interactions in tropical cyclones. Primary responsibilities include developing, analyzing, and maintaining observational and numerical model data sets. The role specifically involves documenting and quantifying the impact of emerging technology data sets, such as drones, high-altitude balloons, and robotic ocean expendables, through numerical and AI modeling. Candidates must use advanced programming languages like Python or MATLAB to develop code for analyzing large data sets. Key tasks include running high-level numerical models, producing peer-reviewed manuscripts, and participating in the annual NOAA Hurricane Field Program to collect novel observations and improve hurricane model physics.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain observational and numerical model data sets for tropical cyclone research.
  • Quantify the impact of emerging technology data sets like drones and high-altitude balloons.
  • Use AI and machine learning concepts to analyze large observational data sets.
  • Run and analyze high-level numerical models to understand tropical cyclone structure and intensity.
  • Analyze NOAA observational data to improve hurricane model physics and forecasts.
  • Write and publish scientific results in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop clearly written code and comments to process and analyze complex data.
  • Participate in the annual NOAA Hurricane Field Program to collect novel observations.

What we're looking for

  • PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Knowledge of an advanced programming language such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Basic understanding of the current state of tropical cyclone research.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse and dynamic team.
  • Knowledge of air-sea interactions and boundary-layer processes in hurricanes (preferred).
  • Advanced programming skills and a strong publication record (preferred).
  • Skills in analyzing and evaluating large data sets (highly desirable).
  • Experience with field experiments and hurricane forecast models (preferred).
