TL;DR · | Microsoft Careers

As a Principal Technical Program Manager at Microsoft Research (MSR), you will join a multidisciplinary team shaping the future of AI infrastructure by translating early-stage research into shippable cloud AI capabilities. Your day-to-day involves partnering with researchers and Azure engineering teams to develop technical roadmaps, manage external suppliers, and ensure timely delivery of critical dependencies. You will define success criteria for moving prototypes to general availability, aligning cross-functional teams across MSR, Azure, and the supplier ecosystem. Key responsibilities include designing technical solutions that span models, systems, and hardware, making data-driven recommendations, and validating use cases against live workloads at cloud scale. The role requires a strong background in computer engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, or related fields, with experience in program management and knowledge of optics/photonics, networking, and simulation tools.

What you'll do

  • Translate early-stage AI research into shippable cloud capabilities, shaping product roadmaps with researchers and Azure engineering teams.
  • Design technical solutions spanning models, systems, and hardware, making data-driven recommendations to address trade-offs and risks.
  • Define success criteria for moving research prototypes to general availability, ensuring alignment among MSR, Azure, and supplier stakeholders.
  • Own the program structure end-to-end, managing roadmap, schedule, staging plans, and governance across multi-team efforts.
  • Validate use cases against live workloads, instrument performance metrics at cloud AI scale, and bring customer feedback back to researchers.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (engineering, computer science, physics) and 6+ years experience in technical roles.
  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant field with 6+ years experience in engineering or product development.
  • Basic understanding of optics/photonics for engaging researchers and suppliers on technical trade-offs.
  • Knowledge of networking and interconnects including datacenter networking and high-speed interconnects.
  • Familiarity with hardware/system simulation tools and advanced packaging techniques.
  • Effective communication skills to justify technical assumptions to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working on research or industry projects related to AI systems design.
