TL;DR · Hardware Reliability Engineer, Watch System Reliability

As a Hardware Reliability Engineer - Watch System Reliability, you will define and defend product durability from early architecture through mass production. You will partner with Product Design, EE, and Materials teams to conduct FMEAs, identify high-risk failure mechanisms, and develop accelerated test methodologies based on physics-of-failure principles. Your daily work involves designing specialized test equipment, performing statistical modeling using Weibull distribution and accelerated degradation analysis, and leading physical failure analysis investigations including X-ray, CT, SEM, and EDS to determine root causes. You will translate complex data into executive narratives to inform design decisions for compact electromechanical systems and wearable devices. Required skills include expertise in mechanical or electrical engineering, proficiency in tools like JMP, Python, or R, and experience managing environmental ingress, corrosion kinetics, and material fatigue within the watch product domain.

What you'll do

  • Identify high-risk failure mechanisms and design out vulnerabilities during early architecture and concept phases.
  • Develop novel reliability test procedures that map real-world user behaviors into accelerated laboratory environments.
  • Lead the technical definition, development, and delivery of specialized test equipment and automated fixtures.
  • Perform statistical modeling of reliability data to establish design margins and project annual failure rates.
  • Lead physical failure analysis investigations using X-ray, CT, and SEM to determine root causes and design mitigations.
  • Translate complex, ambiguous datasets into clear technical narratives and risk assessments for executive leadership.

What we're looking for

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of hands-on industry experience in hardware reliability engineering, product validation, or failure analysis.
  • Deep practical background in physical failure analysis techniques including Optical Microscopy, X-ray/CT, SEM/EDS, and cross-sectioning.
  • Proven history of developing custom reliability test suites, authoring engineering specs, and bringing up automated fixtures under NPI schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-signal technical presentations and communicate complex trade-offs to multi-disciplinary teams and executives.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 10% for factory builds and vendor lab audits.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or an equivalent field (preferred).
  • Mastery of reliability statistics and modeling tools like JMP, Python, or R (preferred).
