TL;DR · Development Test Engineer, Structures (Starship)

The Development Test Engineer role at Starship in the Structures team involves designing and executing static and dynamic structural tests for large systems. Daily tasks include creating test procedures, building mechanical and fluid systems, troubleshooting data acquisition setups, and providing direction to technicians during test assembly and execution. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and experience with testing, mechanical design, and control system work. Proficiency in NI-based DAQ systems and familiarity with strain gages, pressure transducers, and thermocouples is essential. The position requires working in tight spaces, handling hazardous materials, and operating under strict deadlines on projects that integrate electrical, mechanical, and software systems.

What you'll do

  • Design and build mechanical systems ranging from small lugs to large structural weldments.
  • Develop and troubleshoot fluid systems including high-pressure gaseous working fluids and cryogenic propellants.
  • Create and maintain test procedures, sequences, scripts, configuration files, and software for system-level tests.
  • Operate the test stand during assembly, activation, and execution phases with a small team of engineers and technicians.
  • Provide daily direction to technicians for integrating test articles and hardware, including installing instrumentation and wiring.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, electrical engineering or related field
  • 1+ years of experience in testing, mechanical design, and control system design
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, including NI-based platforms
  • Ability to work on projects involving integration of electrical, mechanical, and software systems
  • Demonstrated capability to operate under technical and schedule pressure with limited scope definition
