Role Overview
The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is a senior executive responsible for defining and executing the company’s technology vision, strategy, and architecture in support of long‑term growth, innovation, and operational excellence. As a software company operating within State Street Corporation, the CTO will balance the agility and innovation of a technology firm with the rigor, security, and regulatory expectations of a global financial institution.
The CTO will have full accountability for technology delivery outcomes across Software Engineering, Quality Assurance, Architecture, and Platform Engineering, while delegating day‑to‑day operational management to strong senior leaders. This role is central to advancing a cloud‑native, AI‑enabled, and secure technology ecosystem that accelerates time‑to‑market and enables differentiated, industry‑leading solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Technology & Engineering Leadership
- Provide executive leadership and strategic oversight of Software Engineering, Quality Assurance, Architecture, and platform teams, with end‑to‑end accountability for technology delivery and outcomes.
- Establish clear operating models, performance standards, and governance to ensure high‑quality, scalable, and resilient technology solutions.
- Build and retain world‑class engineering and architecture talent, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Platform & Infrastructure Transformation
- Lead the evolution of the company’s technology platforms and delivery infrastructure toward a modern, cloud‑native future state.
- Drive improvements in speed‑to‑market, system performance, resiliency, scalability, and security while ensuring operational excellence.
- Champion modernization of legacy platforms and adoption of contemporary engineering practices and tooling.
Architecture & Portfolio Strategy
- Define, own, and evangelize a long‑term enterprise architecture that enables the delivery of industry‑leading front‑to‑back (F2B) solutions.
- Drive alignment and rationalization of the technology portfolio across Engineering, Alpha, SaaS, and other business units to ensure consistency, reuse, and strategic coherence.
- Ensure architectural decisions support business growth, regulatory requirements, and future scalability.
DevOps & Delivery Enablement
- Establish and mature DevOps practices, including continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD), to accelerate code‑to‑production cycles.
- Standardize development and release processes to improve developer productivity, reliability, and operational transparency.
- Promote automation and engineering excellence across the software development lifecycle.
Security, Risk & Resiliency
- Own and oversee all software security concerns across the product suite, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements.
- Partner closely with enterprise security, risk, and compliance teams to proactively identify and mitigate technology risks.
- Ensure platforms and applications are designed with security, resiliency, and availability built in by design.
AI & Advanced Technology Adoption
- Spearhead the adoption of Artificial Intelligence across internal platforms, engineering processes, and operational workflows to enhance automation, decision‑making, and efficiency.
- Champion the integration of AI capabilities into client‑facing products and services to deliver differentiated value and competitive advantage.
- Ensure responsible, ethical, and scalable use of AI technologies in alignment with enterprise standards.
Financial & Executive Partnership
- Partner with Finance and the Executive Leadership Team to optimize technology investment, manage cost efficiency, and maximize return on investment.
- Drive transparency and discipline in technology spend while supporting sustainable growth and client success.
- Contribute to the broader enterprise strategy as a trusted technology advisor.
Growth & Enterprise Alignment
- Drive the technology roadmap that supports the company’s ambition to become a billion‑dollar, technology‑led enterprise.
- Partner closely with parent company leadership to bring collective strategy and vision to life, promoting collaboration across business lines.
- Maintain a strong alignment with the parent company’s CIO organization through a dual reporting model to ensure enterprise coherence and leverage shared capabilities.
External & Market‑Facing Responsibilities
- Client Engagement: Articulate the company’s technology strategy, roadmap, and architectural philosophy to clients and prospects, clearly linking innovation to business outcomes.
- Sales Enablement: Support sales efforts by positioning the company’s platforms (including Alpha) as best‑in‑class solutions in the marketplace.
- Market Intelligence: Monitor emerging technologies, industry trends, and competitive dynamics to inform technology and operating strategy.
- M&A and Partnerships: Lead technical and organizational due diligence for potential acquisitions, partnerships, and strategic investments.
- Brand & Thought Leadership: Partner with Marketing to strengthen the company’s digital and technology brand; represent the organization at industry conferences, media engagements, and executive forums.
Executive Profile
The ideal candidate is a seasoned technology executive with deep experience leading large‑scale software platforms in complex, regulated environments. They bring a proven track record of platform modernization, cloud and AI adoption, and delivering business‑critical technology at scale—while operating effectively within a matrixed enterprise structure.
Salary Range:
$300,000 - $412,500 Annual
The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
