Compute Runtime Software Engineer

What you'll do

• Develop virtualization-based runtimes to execute Virtual Machines and Linux Containers across data centers and Apple platforms.
• Build and maintain container runtime technology with a focus on privacy, security, and performance.
• Solve complex systems problems involving kernel security, image distribution, filesystems, and virtualization.
• Maintain the "Apple Container" open-source project for native container support on macOS desktops.
• Write well-tested code in languages such as C, C++, Swift, or Go.
• Contribute to technical design documents and participate in high-level technical discussions.
• Troubleshoot metrics to identify resource contention and performance bottlenecks.
• Design benchmarks and load tests to characterize system performance and establish scalability models.

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent related experience.
• At least 3 years of software design and development experience in infrastructure engineering, containerization, or systems programming.
• Proficiency in C, C++, Swift, or Go.
• Familiarity with Linux containerization, filesystems, image distribution, content storage, and kernel/container security.
• Ability to contribute to technical design documents and write clear, well-tested code.
• Experience with Linux system programming and participating in peer code reviews.
• Experience in cloud security, container/Linux kernel security, or API security.
• Experience troubleshooting resource contention, designing benchmarks, or working with orchestration systems like Kubernetes.
