TL;DR · Agentic AI & LLM Applications Software Development Engineer, Senior

Join our Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) team as a Senior Software Development Engineer to build the next generation of agentic AI systems. You will design and develop LLM integrations, tool-calling systems, and AI-powered features that users interact with daily, focusing on agentic workflows, multi-agent communication, and reliable production deployment. Key responsibilities include implementing A2A communication patterns, managing context windows, building RAG features, and evaluating LLM quality through pipelines. You will work closely with product, UX, and applied science teams to translate requirements into technical designs and ensure robust privacy and security practices. Ideal candidates have 7+ years of software engineering experience, proficiency in Python and other backend languages, and knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS or GCP, along with a background in building production systems on LLMs and multi-agent architectures.

What you'll do

  • Design and build core agentic workflows for multi-step reasoning, planning, memory, and tool-use.
  • Implement A2A communication patterns at the application layer to enable agent collaboration and task handoff.
  • Own LLM orchestration including prompt construction, context management, model selection logic, and response parsing.
  • Build RAG features such as query formulation, result ranking, citation grounding, and hallucination mitigation.
  • Develop evaluation pipelines for assessing LLM quality through grounding assessment, regression testing, safety checks.

What we're looking for

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with production systems.
  • Experience in high-velocity environments, owning and shipping complex products end-to-end.
  • Proficiency in at least two backend languages, including Python.
  • Expertise in building and operating cloud-based systems on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Knowledge of modern backend frameworks, async patterns, algorithms, data structures, APIs, and software design patterns.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
