Role Details

The group you’ll be a part of

In the Global Products Group, we are dedicated to excellence in the design and engineering of Lam’s etch and deposition products. We drive innovation to ensure our cutting-edge solutions are helping to solve the biggest challenges in the semiconductor industry.

This position is part of Lam’s Global Products Group (GPG) within the Wet Equipment Technology Systems (WETs) organization, where we design and deliver industry‑leading wet processing tools for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

Location

Lam Research – WETs Product Group in Tualatin, Oregon

The impact you’ll make

As a Systems Engineer IV , you will serve as the Lead Systems Engineer for a next‑generation semiconductor manufacturing tool. You will join the program early in its lifecycle and play a critical role in defining the system architecture, requirements, and integration strategy that guide the design from concept through production.

In this highly visible role, you will act as the system‑level technical owner and integrator, working across mechanical, electrical, software, controls, mechatronics, and process engineering teams. Your work will directly reduce integration risk, accelerate development, and ensure delivery of a robust, scalable, and manufacturable product to our customers.

What you’ll do

Lead System‑Level Technical Execution

  • Serve as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for system‑level technical coordination across Software, Electrical Engineering, Controls, Mechatronics, Mechanical, and Process disciplines.
  • Provide system‑level technical direction, ensuring alignment across teams and proactively identifying gaps, risks, and integration issues.
  • Influence and lead without formal authority, driving closure of cross‑functional technical actions and decisions.
  • Partner closely with Program Management, Product Management, and Technical Owners to balance scope, cost, schedule, and performance.

Own System Design and Architecture

  • Own the top‑level system specification and architecture, ensuring alignment with product requirements, customer needs, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Define the system from concept through production readiness, including problem statements, system needs, stakeholder and use‑case analysis, system boundaries, functional allocation, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Decompose the system into functional subsystems with clear Subsystem Functional Specifications, defined interfaces, and allocated error budgets and design margins.
  • Maintain accountability for the system P&ID, interconnect definitions, and signal lists (port maps).
  • Review and approve Interface Control Documents (ICDs) between key subsystems.

Drive Documentation, Validation, and Quality

  • Own and author the System Theory of Operation, describing how the system functions as an integrated whole.
  • Guide and consult on the development of functional specifications, high‑level BOM structures, and engineering documentation supporting product requirements and options.
  • Be accountable for system‑level validation and test reports.
  • Consult on Certificates of Analysis (COA), Lam Quality Data (LQD) specifications, and identification of Critical Value parts for key POR sub‑tasks.

Ensure Robust Testing and Risk Management

  • Consult in the development of subsystem‑level test plans and own validation of system‑level test plans.
  • Review and approve test results against system and subsystem requirements.
  • Ensure designs meet DFx criteria (reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, safety, and cost) across the full product lifecycle.
  • Own and approve Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) at the system level.
  • Drive early identification and mitigation of integration, reliability, and performance risks.

Who we’re looking for

Who You Are

You are a systems thinker who thrives in complex, multidisciplinary environments and enjoys shaping products from early concept through execution. You bring deep technical expertise in at least one engineering discipline, a strong systems perspective, and the ability to lead through influence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field with 8+ years of experience, or
  • Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or controls design for large, complex manufacturing systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or owning system‑level design, integration, and validation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts across disciplines.
  • Proven ability to work with minimal guidance, manage ambiguity, and drive complex projects to completion.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and troubleshooting skills applied to complex systems.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with semiconductor manufacturing equipment (wet processing, deposition, etch, or related platforms).
  • Hands‑on experience with system integration, debug, and validation in a new product development environment.
  • Familiarity with system‑level reliability allocation, DFx tradeoffs, and lifecycle cost considerations.
  • Experience authoring system specifications, P&IDs, ICDs, and validation documentation.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to systems engineering best practices.
