As a Senior Backend Engineer at Wise, you will join a core team within the Identity Risk Platform squad to drive technical design and implementation for high-throughput, low-latency services that power global risk platforms. Your responsibilities include architectural ownership of critical systems, ensuring clean API contracts between product squads and verification providers, mentoring junior engineers, and implementing robust data governance standards. You will work with Java, REST APIs, microservices, Kafka, SQL/NoSQL databases, and Redis to build scalable, resilient backend services that meet stringent regulatory requirements. This role demands strong OOP experience, hands-on technical skills, and the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively across cross-functional teams.
Design and implement high-throughput, low-latency services for Wise’s Identity Risk Platform.
Ensure clean API contracts and a unified identity view between Product squads and Verification providers.
Mentor multi-level engineering teams and set technical standards for the squad.
Contribute to data governance by implementing technical standards for Data Lineage and Auditability.
Lead hands-on technical design and implementation for evolving core Identity and Account domains.
What we're looking for
Experienced in designing and implementing high-throughput, low-latency microservices.
Proficient in Java and modern technology stacks including REST APIs, CI/CD pipelines.
Strong mentorship skills with experience guiding junior engineers (IC2-IC3).
Expertise in schema design, indexing strategies, and query optimization for ACID-compliant systems.
Hands-on experience with distributed caching solutions like Redis or Valhalla.
Skilled in Kafka and SQL/NoSQL databases for complex backend systems requiring reliability and data consistency.
Capable of articulating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
