As an R&D Engineer I in Medtronic’s Cranial & Spinal Technologies unit, you will contribute to developing life-saving medical devices for spine surgery by collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to design and test implants, instruments, and systems. Your daily tasks include gathering Voice of the Customer input, translating it into product requirements, conducting tests, and managing system interfaces. You will work on spinal implants and instrumentation to treat various conditions such as degenerative diseases, deformities, and trauma. The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, preferably with mechanical design experience, along with proficiency in CAD software like CREO or SolidWorks. Ideal candidates possess strong analytical skills, creativity, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while adhering to FDA regulations and ISO standards.
Develops and designs new medical device products for spine surgery from initial concept to market release.
Conducts product testing, experiments, and evaluations to optimize design and ensure compliance with user needs and regulatory standards.
Engages with internal and external customers to gather Voice of the Customer (VOC) input and translate it into product requirements and mechanical concepts.
Supports verification and validation activities to ensure products meet system requirements and intended use before market release.
Contributes to domain knowledge in spinal systems through customer visits, pre-clinical labs, literature searches, and training sessions.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical-related field required; preference for Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with mechanical design experience.
Experience with engineering drawing standards, including GD&T and tolerance stacks.
Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
Knowledge of surgical instruments use conditions and OR setup (spine-specific knowledge preferred).
Capability to define and follow priorities in a fast-paced environment with multiple simultaneous projects.
Excellent written and communication skills for documentation and presentations.
