The Interactive Multimodal Futures (IMF) group at Microsoft Research is seeking a PhD-level Research Intern to contribute to cutting-edge projects in situated interaction, affective computing, and human-centered AI systems. This role involves designing and implementing research prototypes for real-time adaptive interaction, exploring generative AI techniques for multimodal data interpretation, conducting user studies, and analyzing complex datasets. The intern will work closely with IMF researchers to develop machine learning models and share findings through publications. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in HCI, HRI, or related fields, experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch, and proficiency in human-centered design methods. Familiarity with multimodal sensing technologies, reinforcement learning, and real-time interactive systems is preferred, along with demonstrated skills in conducting field research and implementing prototypes that integrate multiple machine-learned components such as computer vision and speech recognition.

What we're looking for
Currently enrolled in a PhD program related to HCI, HRI, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Psychology, or similar.
At least 2 years of research experience using human-centered approaches in areas like ML, CV, Affective Computing.
Experience with generative AI techniques and real-time interactive systems.
Strong collaboration and communication skills for conducting user studies and analyzing multimodal data.
Background in affective computing, including physiological sensing and wearable device experience.
Demonstrated ability to program multimodal systems that interact with real human users outside of a controlled lab environment.
