As a Staff Software Development Engineer Backend Node.js at CVS Digital, you will lead the technical direction of an API platform that enables teams to design, manage, and deploy APIs across gateway environments. Your day-to-day responsibilities include architecting backend systems, designing GraphQL APIs, and driving development with TypeScript, Node.js, Fastify, and PostgreSQL. You will also shape infrastructure for provisioning and integrating API gateways, define patterns for service reliability and observability, and mentor engineers to improve delivery quality. This role requires expertise in modern backend frameworks, API gateway technologies, relational databases, distributed workflows, authentication patterns, and observability practices. Lead backend architecture and design of GraphQL APIs across core services.
Drive development of TypeScript-based backend services using Node.js, Fastify.

Improve engineering standards through code review, testing strategy, and mentoring.
What we're looking for
7+ years of software engineering experience with significant backend and platform engineering in production environments.
Strong expertise in TypeScript and modern Node.js backend development, including Fastify or similar frameworks.
Proven experience designing and operating scalable GraphQL APIs and API gateways like Kong or Apigee.
Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL or other relational databases for schema design, migrations, performance tuning, and data modeling.
Hands-on experience with distributed workflows, asynchronous orchestration systems such as Temporal, and job-processing platforms.
Strong understanding of authentication patterns including OAuth, OIDC, JWTs, and service-to-service security practices.
