We're building Apple Intelligence to be the most personalized intelligence on the planet. We're looking for a director to lead the team that will define the user experience of a personalized OS. In this role, you'll work across Apple to design and implement experiences that are intuitive, transparent, and respectful of user control and privacy. This is an exciting opportunity to redefine how millions of people interact with their devices everyday while upholding Apple's core values of privacy, accessibility, and inclusion.
Description
In this role, you will lead a diverse team responsible for defining and building personalized Apple Intelligence experiences from the ML models to the infrastructure and the UI. You'll direct the technical work across UI, ML, and infrastructure teams, shaping how personalization manifests across the entire operating system. This position requires deep technical engagement—you'll need to be in the details across all fronts, from model architecture decisions to interaction design principles to system performance.
You'll build a bold, collaborative vision with stakeholders across engineering, design, privacy, accessibility, and leadership to define what a truly personalized OS can be. Your team will own the full lifecycle—from early prototyping and experimentation through production deployment and ongoing maintenance—ensuring that personalized experiences work beautifully for everyone.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers across UI, machine learning, and infrastructure, fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives drive innovation
- Define and drive the technical strategy for personalized OS experiences, balancing user needs, privacy requirements, and system constraints
- Shape how personalization surfaces across the OS, partnering with Design to architect and build experiences that feel intuitive, transparent, and respectful of user agency
- Drive the architecture and technical direction that enables personalized experiences to scale across apps, services, and system features
- Engage deeply in technical decision-making across the stack—from ML model selection, prompt optimization, and evaluation to determine the right level of personalization, to UI architecture to infrastructure design
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners including Design, Privacy Engineering, Performance & Power, Accessibility, and Product Marketing to build shared vision and alignment
- Communicate complex technical trade-offs and strategy clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executive leadership
- Build and scale a world-class team through thoughtful hiring, development, and retention of diverse talent
Minimum Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering with increasing leadership responsibility
- Proven track record of managing managers leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple technical domains
- Deep technical expertise with UI/client engineering and either machine learning systems or large-scale infrastructure
- Experience building personalized or adaptive user experiences at scale
- Experience shipping consumer-facing software from concept through production and maintenance
- Strong collaborator with demonstrated ability to build consensus across engineering, design, product, and cross-functional teams
- Excellent communication skills with ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Track record of building inclusive, high-performing teams and developing engineering talent
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Apple platforms (iOS, macOS, iPadOS) and development ecosystems
- Experience working with machine learning models in production, including prompt engineering, evaluation methodologies, and quality tuning
- Experience with on-device ML and edge computing architectures
- Deep understanding of privacy-preserving techniques and privacy-by-design principles
- Experience leading through ambiguity and defining technical vision in emerging product spaces
- Background working on operating system features or platform-level capabilities
