Position Summary:

The Enterprise IT Architecture Director is responsible for leading and maturing the Enterprise IT Architecture capability at Marathon Petroleum (MPC). The Director owns the enterprise IT architecture operating model, ensuring consistent and modernized architectural practices and clear decision rights while leading both direct and matrixed architects to deliver and execute architecture in collaboration with multiple stakeholders through the facilitation of target-state designs, current state assessments, and facilitation of roadmaps to achieve business objectives in alignment with MPC strategy.

This position is accountable for business results primarily achieved through the work of others. Manages staff, sets direction, and deploys resources. The Director is responsible for employee development, performance reviews, pay reviews, and staffing decisions. Accountable for business, functional or operational areas, processes, or programs. This position reports to the Sr. Director of IT - Performance Excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads managers and individual contributors through guidance, coaching, and support to ensure assignments align with organizational goals and established policies. Drives recruitment, development, retention, performance management, and succession planning to build a strong talent pipeline.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders and senior management to provide strategic guidance on technology risks, opportunities, and prioritization, ensuring cost effective and agile solutions.
  • Oversees the planning, design, implementation, and measurement of IT systems, balancing agility with stability, security, and efficiency.
  • Practice owner and lead for the Enterprise IT Architecture function focused on achieving valued outcomes through a federated model of Enterprise Architects, Solution Architects, System Architects and specific domain architects (Cyber, Information, Data, and Business).
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive enterprise architecture framework, standards, governance principles, and provides strategic guidance on technology acquisition and lifecycle management.
  • Ensures IT Architecture and associated technology solutions are in place to meet business objectives and able to respond with agility to changing business priorities.
  • Sets and drives the enterprise architecture vision and strategy with actionable roadmaps, to include emerging technologies, trends, and various architectural perspectives (e.g., business, information/data, application, technology and security)
  • Develops and manages a comprehensive Technical Debt reduction/elimination strategy and plan that is prioritized, aligned, and integrated into appropriate execution backlogs and monitored for completion and goal achievement.
  • Partners effectively with 3rd party service firms in support of the EA agenda and as enablers to the broader IT strategy while partnering effectively for internal alignment on roles and responsibilities across the IT Strategy-to-Disposition Value Stream.
  • Owns and leads the development of the Future State Architecture and related enterprise technology roadmap, while ensuring transparency on the state of the Architecture footprint and opportunities for improvement in alignment with MPC’s Strategy.
  • Leads the integration of primary architecture domains (Business, Application, Technology, Information and Security) across business units, major programs and value streams.
  • Influences and shapes enterprise-wide technology investment decisions, ensuring alignment with long-term business goals and risk posture.
  • Serves as the primary architectural authority for major transformation initiatives, mergers / acquisitions, and digital innovation programs.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other computer-related degree required.
  • ITIL®, TOGAF®, Agile, SAFe®, PMI®, Organization Change Management, and Lean Six Sigma certifications preferred.
  • Twelve (12) or more years of diversified IT experience required.
  • Five (5) or more years of directly managing professional staff required.
  • Six (6) or more years of experience in technical IT architect capacity required.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience leading and managing an Enterprise Architecture function preferred.
  • Experience with cloud technologies, microservices architecture, and emerging technologies such as generative AI and its applications preferred.
  • Experience with implementing and utilizing Enterprise Architecture tools, graphical modeling approaches, and repository management preferred.
  • Experience in the industrial, manufacturing, or oil and gas industry preferred.
