Position Summary...

What you'll do...

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and development of highly scalable, distributed systems powering Walmart’s Marketplace and Seller experiences. This role requires deep expertise in system architecture, distributed computing, and modern platform design, along with hands-on experience in building and scaling GenAI-driven capabilities.
As a technical leader, you will own complex, cross-domain initiatives spanning multiple services and platforms. You will drive architectural decisions, ensure system reliability and performance at scale, and build solutions that handle high-throughput, real-time workloads. You will also play a key role in integrating GenAI capabilities into production systems, enabling intelligent automation and enhanced user experiences.
You will collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and platform teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions. This role requires strong stakeholder management, the ability to navigate ambiguity, and influence across teams to deliver cohesive, end-to-end systems.
In addition, you will mentor engineers, set engineering standards, and lead by example in driving code quality, system design, and operational excellence. You will be expected to think beyond individual services and contribute to platform-level architecture, ensuring scalability, extensibility, and long-term sustainability of the ecosystem.

Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization.

What you'll do:

  • Lead architecture and design of scalable distributed systems across multiple services, ensuring high performance, reliability, and extensibility at scale.
  • Drive complex, cross-team initiatives end-to-end, aligning stakeholders across Product, Engineering, and platform teams to deliver cohesive solutions.
  • Build and integrate GenAI-driven capabilities into production systems, enabling intelligent automation and improved user experiences.
  • Own technical direction and decision-making, including system design (HLD/LLD), trade-offs, and long-term platform strategy.
  • Mentor engineers and elevate engineering standards, driving best practices in code quality, testing, observability, and operational excellence.

  • Experience with modern technologies including GenAI and scalable platforms – applies new technologies (e.g., GenAI, event-driven systems) to solve real business problems at scale.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00
Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
