Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As a CO+I Forensic Engineer, you will perform a key role in the resiliency of our core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform.

The Forensic Engineering Team plays a critical role in ensuring the uptime, reliability, and availability of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. We are seeking a Forensic Engineer with a background in electrical, mechanical or controls engineering and experience in critical environments to lead complex investigations, contribute to shaping long-term technical strategies, and influence global standards across our datacenter portfolio. This individual will function as a subject matter expert within the team and support the team and organization with expertise in data center systems, design, and troubleshooting.

"This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Redmond, WA, Atlanta, GA, San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, or Washington DC. Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates should relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location. This role is hybrid work, 3 days / week in-office"

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and track forensic analysis of events which have occurred within the datacenter infrastructure.
  • Function as a subject matter expert, able to speak to aspects of datacenter functions and failure modes in critical environments.
  • Develop methodologies to validate datacenter performance, system control parameters and operational efficiency against design intent and determine quantifiable deviations.
  • Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis associated with equipment failure.
  • Review equipment and system performance data to identify issues through trend analysis.
  • Assists in the troubleshooting of issues in the field, remotely or in person.
  • Review compliance with existing corrective and preventative maintenance programs to enhance operational readiness.
  • Analyze full-time employee and vendor staff expertise to include training, procedures, and site requirements as part of root cause analysis and solution implementations.
  • Foster and promote our proactive implementation of lessons learned from analysis across multiple design, construction, and operational organizations.
  • Develop solutions for defects identified through trends and data analysis.
  • Drive global standardization and consistency of processes, procedures, and reports with Datacenter Operations.
  • Work with Site Operations Engineers to establish visual standards, process improvement and error-proofing systems to drive efficiency and availability within the business.
  • Identify and monitor the need for use of new tools to improve the quality of data and analytics.

While not required, we are also looking for the following Preferred Qualifications:

  • Forensic engineering experience within a reliability organization in a different industry
  • Experience with IT infrastructure in a data center engineering or operations environment
  • Experience leading cross-disciplinary reviews to identify and mitigate risks
  • Strong sense of urgency and passion for uncovering root causes and systemic triggers
  • Strategic thinker with deep understanding of other datacenter topologies and mission-critical systems
  • Advanced analytical skills with ability to synthesize complex data across systems and drive insights
  • Collaborative leader with ability to influence across engineering, operations, and leadership teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce and review complex technical documentation

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience.
  • OR Doctorate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience.
  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience.
  • OR 12+ years relevant technical engineering experience.

Additional or preferred qualifications

  • Doctorate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years technical engineering experience.

-Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Reliability Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.   Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation. Reliability Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
